Energize the Future with Solar Power

Solar Company Toronto Ontario

When it comes to solar panels, there are three main types: Monocrystalline, Polycrystalline and thin-film solar panels. The best solar panels for you will depend on your budget and the amount of light that’s available in your location.

Solar panels can be DIY but we recommend hiring professional solar panel installers like GoSolar Toronto. Solar installation in Ontario is complex, especially if you don’t have experience. With our years of knowledge and experience in solar panel installation in the Toronto GTA, you can trust our solar advisors.

Monocrystalline Solar Panels

Also known as single-crystal panels, monocrystalline panels are made from a single pure silicon crystal that is cut into several wafers. They are easily identified by their dark black colour because they are made of pure silicon. Due to their use of pure silicon, monocrystalline takes up less space (most space-efficient of 3 types), handles high temperatures well and has an impressive lifespan.

However, this comes at a cost: a significant amount of silicon is wasted in the production of a single monocrystalline cell, sometimes exceeding 50%. As a result, the price is high.

  • Monocrystalline panels have an efficiency rating over 20%
  • Highest power capacity. These panels can generate up to 300w of power capacity
  • Most expensive. Average cost per Watt is $1 - $1.50

Polycrystalline Solar Panels

As the name implies, these are made up of multiple silicon crystals rather than just one. Melted silicon fragments are poured into a square mould. This makes polycrystalline cells much more affordable because there is little waste, and it also gives them their distinctive square shape.

However, because their silicon purity and construction are lower than that of monocrystalline panels, they are less efficient in terms of energy conversion and space. They are also less heat tolerant, making them less efficient in high-temperature environments.

  • Polycrystalline panels have an efficiency rating between 15-17%
  • Second highest power capacity. A standard 60-cell polycrystalline panel is now capable of producing between 240-300w
  • Lower costs. Average cost per Watt is $0.70 - $1

Thin-Film Solar Panels

Thin-film panels are defined by very fine layers that are thin enough to be flexible. Since each panel does not need a frame backing, they are lighter and easier to install. Unlike crystalline silicon panels, which come in standard sizes of 60, 72, and 96 cells, thin-film panels can be customized to meet specific needs. They are, however, less efficient than standard silicon solar panels.

Unlike crystalline panels that use silicon, thin-film solar panels are made from different materials. These are:

  • Cadmium telluride (CdTe)
  • Amorphous silicon (a-Si)
  • Copper indium gallium selenide (CIGS)
  • Amorphous silicon panels have an efficiency rating between 6-8%
  • Least expensive. Average cost for Amorphous silicon per Watt is $0.43 - $0.50

Which solar panel is best for my Toronto Ontario home?

After reading about the different types of residential solar panels above, you might be wondering which is best for your home? Thin-film solar panels are not usually recommended for residential installations because they require larger installation areas. They are more suited to commercial and utility applications where there is more room for a larger-scale installation. This makes the decision primarily between monocrystalline and polycrystalline panels.

Even though they are more expensive, GoSolar Toronto highly recommends installing monocrystalline solar panels on your Toronto home because they provide homeowners with numerous long-term benefits. Monocrystalline solar panels have the highest efficiency rates, are very space-efficient, last over 25 years, preform in low-light conditions and their black appearance is very aesthetically pleasing. On the other hand, polycrystalline solar panels are much simpler and cost less. However, they aren't as efficient as monocrystalline panels and they take up more space and don't last as long. Given this information, homeowners can decide if they want to go with the cheaper option but sacrifice some efficiency or invest in monocrystalline solar panels and reap the benefits for decades.
